MISSION:  To cast, prepare and thermal process test material required for certification of alloy for the division and parts for LPCS and SSBO. Thermal treatment is performed in air or vacuum heat treat furnaces to change metal microstructure to meet the mechanical properties required by our customer specifications.


Preparation and Scheduling:

Objective:  To cast test molds and prepare test material for thermal treatment, testing and analysis. To cast,  to accurately prepare, and efficiently stage material for heat treat processing; to schedule loads to produce maximum furnace load efficiency and meet required span times.

Essential Job Functions:

1. Reviews metal proving instructions and tech cards to identify and determine casting requirements, preparation, temperature and load requirements, and determine delivery requirements.

2. Communicates with the Test material coordinators for LPC, SSBO and Deer Creek to determine priorities.

3. Communicates with Part Engineers, Chief Metallurgist and ASC Quality Engineer to determine priorities.

4. Cast and prepare test material as required by Metal proving instructions or tech cards.

5. Operates saws, sandblasters, and grinding equipment to cut and prepare samples for thermal treatment or analysis.

6. Identifies and consolidates materials with the same processing requirements.

7. Inspects material for contamination; cleans and preps prior to loading.

8.  Loads test bars in furnace work zone and in baskets by hand; arranges loads to eliminate warping or distortion.

9. Operates fork truck to move material in and out of the work area.

10. Delivers test material to MTPL for testing.

11. Program the electronic Heat Treat Controller to achieve the heating and cooling rates required by specification.

Air casting furnace operation.

Objective:  To operate the burnout furnace to preheat test bar molds in preparation for casting. To operate the air induction furnace to melt alloys at the proper temperatures and to pour each mold consistently and according to the metal proving instructions.

Essential Job Functions:

12. Inspects furnace systems to ensure proper operations.

13. Loads molds into the burnout furnace according to metal proving instructions; sets controls and monitors temperatures and ramp rates.

14. Melt ingots, monitoring the metal temperature, to meet specification requirements and pour into molds.

15. Completes logs, production reports and records on all phases of the casting process

Air Heat Treat Furnace Operations.

Objective:  To operate high and low temperature air heat treat furnaces at optimal capacity, insuring compliance with customer specifications and proper furnace operating procedures.

Essential Job Functions:

16. Inspects furnace systems to ensure proper operations.

17. Loads furnace according to load charts; sets controls and monitors computerized Data Acquisition System.

18. Operates and monitors computerized Data Acquisition System.

19. Controls argon flow to achieve proper dewpoint levels throughout the heat treat process.

20. Performs Annual and Quarterly TUS surveys.

Documentation: Completes records,  non-conformance reports  and production reports.

Vacuum Heat Treat Furnace Operations.

Objective:  To operate vacuum furnaces at         optimal efficiency, ensuring compliance with customer specifications.

Essential Job Functions:

21. Checks pumps and elements in furnace; checks leak rate.

22. Loads/unloads and operates furnaces; controls and adjusts furnace temperatures; operates quench.

23. Monitors all aspects of the process, including dew point, vacuum level and temperature ramp/hold time.

24. Operates and monitors computerized Data Acquisition System.

25. Controls argon flow to achieve proper dewpoint levels throughout the heat treat process.

26. Maintains proper vacuum level and temperature ramp/hold during cycle.

27. Performs Annual and Quarterly TUS surveys.


Completes records,  non-conformance reports, and production reports.


Objective:  To maintain heat treat equipment, complete minor repairs and assist maintenance with major equipment problems.

Essential Job Functions:

28. Locates and repairs vacuum, argon and oil leaks.

29. Troubleshoots furnace problems.

30. Performs minor maintenance on furnaces and equipment.

31. Prepares reports, and production reports.

32. Performs housekeeping and other 6S activities to maintain a clean and efficient work area.


Objective:  To take responsibility for and demonstrate safe work practices.

Essential Job Functions:

33. Adheres to plant and department safety rules.

34. Safely operates all equipment and tools.

35. Identifies and reports safety problems.

36. May provide training and work direction as assigned.

37. Performs other tasks as directed.

TRAINING:  Training is provided on the job after modular training and certification.  PCC 1 s Forklift Driving Safety Training must be completed.


1. Working knowledge of air and/or vacuum heat treat furnaces is preferred, OR  demonstrated ability, as shown by one or more years manufacturing furnace operator experience, to function as an expert furnace operator.

2. Working knowledge of air casting operations including mold preparation, furnace and burnout operation.

3. Ability to read and follow complex specifications on Tech Cards, Metal Proving Instructions and Process Control Procedures, perform arithmetic calculations and follow verbal instructions.

4. Basic computer skills.

5. Ability to work independently.

6. Ability to lift and/or maneuver objects weighing up to forty pounds.

7. Ability to work in difficult working conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, molten metal, temperature extremes and other elements for extended periods of time.


• ASC requires basic metallurgy course as a training requirement.
