Careers in HVAC

by Amit Agarwal
Ever since the invention of air conditioning in 1902, almost every business linked to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) has grown rapidly. Broadly speaking, the HVAC field includes appliances from very small refrigerators, air conditioners, and heaters to systems which maintain temperatures in large commercial, residential, and industrial settings. People with HVAC jobs today have diverse career options. Read on to learn about some of them.

A large number of HVAC jobs are for those individuals involved in servicing and maintaining HVAC equipment.
HVAC jobs include the technicians and support personnel who work to install, maintain, and service HVAC equipment in various sectors. HVAC jobs are found today in a wide variety of areas.

HVAC Jobs in Installation

HVAC installation technicians are mechanical and electrical engineers and high-level HVAC tradesmen. They are responsible for properly installing HVAC equipment. However, experts in installation work may experience periods of unemployment when construction activity is low.

HVAC Jobs as Service Technicians

A large number of HVAC jobs are for those individuals involved in servicing and maintaining HVAC equipment. These technicians typically service, repair, and maintain HVAC systems for homes and commercial establishments.

HVAC Jobs as Refrigeration Technicians

The “R” that is sometimes added to the end of HVAC stands for refrigeration. Those with HVACR jobs include refrigeration experts who work on residential or commercial refrigeration units, including cold storage warehouses and large refrigeration units for department stores.

HVAC Jobs Involving Building Automation Systems (DDC)

Modern-day control systems work on computer programs that monitor temperatures, comfort level, and air quality in buildings to provide comfortable and healthy air to breath indoors. HVAC jobs involving building automation systems (also known as DDC systems) are found in large business establishments and also some big residential complexes.

HVAC Jobs as Air Conditioning Technicians

A large number HVAC companies offer jobs to air conditioning technicians. These companies use various methods of air conditioning as part of the refrigeration process for cooling air or water for conditioning and cooling enclosed spaces.

HVAC Jobs as Heating Technicians

Heating systems include gas furnaces, electric furnaces, oil furnaces, radiant heating systems, oil and gas boilers, and heat pumps. Heating technicians are experts in these heating devices.

HVAC Jobs as Ventilation Technicians

Homes and especially kitchens have ductwork and fans with hoods designed for the purpose of ventilation. Ventilation technicians work on these systems and also on air needed for combustion for various heating systems.

Some HVAC companies also offer plumbing services, which are similar to HVAC services. A number of HVAC companies specialize entirely in the commercial HVAC market, servicing large establishments and the temperature control systems for equipment like servers and computers.

Conclusion

Environmental concerns have prompted the development of new energy-saving heating and air conditioning systems. The importance of better energy management should lead to the replacement of older systems and the installation of newer, more efficient systems in existing homes and buildings.

Moreover, the demand for maintenance and service work should increase as businesses and homeowners strive to keep increasingly complex systems operating at peak efficiency.

As a result of these trends, the prospects for HVAC jobs are expected to be excellent, particularly for those who have completed training from an accredited technical school or through a formal apprenticeship.

Do What You Want to Do, Not What You Think You Should Do
I know two men who worked in New York City, each of whom made millions of dollars and immediately quit their jobs, taking up completely different careers as gas station owners in New Jersey. I learned about one of these men when I was in college, and I heard about the other man several years later, when I was a recruiter. For the past several years, I have puzzled over the stories of these t...
